The pump boys sell high octane fuel on North Carolina's Highway 57 and the sassy dinettes, sisters Prudie and Rhetta Cupp, run the Double Cupp Diner next door. Between changing tires and baking pies, the rowdy filling station boys and those friendly waitresses perform a rousing, down-home mix of country Western, rock 'n' roll and blues in this charming tale of friendship, romance and life's simple pleasures. Songs performed on guitars, piano, bass and even kitchen utensils include "Farmer Tan" and "The Night Dolly Parton Was Almost Mine." The show's original Broadway production ran for 573 performances and was nominated for the Best Musical Tony Award.

Sondheim Classic A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum

Full Price:
$25.00
Our Price:
$12.50

One of the funniest musicals ever written, Stephen Sondheim's A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum comes to the Renton Civic Theatre. Sondheim, along with writers Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart, combines plot elements from the comedies of ancient Roman playwright Plautus with the high-spirited antics of Vaudeville for a wild and witty farce set in the ancient city. In exchange for his freedom, a crafty slave sets out to woo a beautiful (but not too bright) courtesan for his young master. Bawdy puns, mistaken identities, and sly social commentary (not to mention Sondheim's classic songs) garnered this Broadway hit multiple Tony awards and a subsequent film adaptation starring Zero Mostel. The music was good, the cast had good voices, the piano player was the surpirse voice though.
It did bring back fond memories of the 5oties, when you actually received service at a station and a friendly smile from your witress.

Good for the older crowd as we remember hiway diners and filling stations. Good for the younger crowd to get a "slice" of what those times were like.

If you like country music you will enjoy it. I thought there would be some jazz and blues. There was a little dancing on one number only which was disappointing as it was billed as a musical.
