Doug Elkins Choreography, Etc.: Nods to Shakespeare, Motown, Paris Is Burning
COMP - $15.00*
Choreographer Doug Elkins returns to American Dance Institute with a program featuring Mo(or)town/Redux (2012) and Scott, Queen of Marys (1994). The New York Times dance critic Alastair Macaulay raved, "To say that I want to see this program again is an understatement." Elkins' movement style draws inspiration from everything from hip-hop to José Limón. Taking a cue from Limón's The Moor's Pavane, Mo(or)town/Redux is a take on Shakespeare's Othello backed by the sounds of Berry Gordy's Motown record label along with neo-Motown music. Scott, Queen of Marys was originally created in 1994 to showcase the talents of the late vogue ball legend Willi Ninja from Paris Is Burning. Set to an original composition by Mio Morales, this piece brings flamboyant drag ball culture back to life!
