Set in Hollywood over a 70-year period, Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage's pseudo-biographical comedy By the Way, Meet Vera Stark follows the life of a headstrong African-American actress who begins a career in the 1930s, at a time when her only shot at success lay in stealing small scenes in big Hollywood blockbusters. Seventy years later, film buffs reflect on the life and legacy of the controversial star, whose eventual fame and fortune came at the price of perpetuating dangerous stereotypes. Nottage artfully blends comedy and social commentary for a thoroughly entertaining yet thought-provoking picture of the cultural climate that shaped Vera Stark. Clever and illuminating, this show draws on screwball films of the 1930s and uses today's fascination with celebrity and controversy to get to the truth behind the legend, and reflect on who she might have been if she'd lived in a different time. Written on Jul 23 2012The acting was excellent
The play was a bit wordy and a bit long. Cutting a few of the fight scenes could help.
Written on Jul 16 2012This starts out well with two fools providing lively banter and exposition, but quickly falls prey to very uneven performances, save the fools, once the story begins. In an effort to keep the pacing lively, most of the drama of the show is lost and characters are largely one dimensional, (if you could understand their often breakneck dialog). Casting was weak, but understandable in a community theater production of this scope. Very strange blocking at times and often counter to the focus of the plot. More time seemed spent on overdone and mediocre sword play than on acting. Overall, standard fare from the community level. Fortunately, it was a beautiful night and a nice outdoor/picnic experience.
Written on Jul 03 2012I really enjoyed the "Shakespearean" production of King Arthur held at the William Land Park Amphitheater! Well done! Great venue for casual gatherings, picnicking beforehand, and time to relax and visit. We were blessed with the most awesome weather as well!
