A wedding toast turns into a one-man virtuoso performance of the greatest Jewish play of all time in The Dybbuk (for Hannah and Sam's Wedding). Multiple Drama Critics Circle Award-winner (and acclaimed multi-character actor) Ron Campbell makes his highly anticipated return to San Diego in this staged reading of the timeless, chilling story of love and exorcism about a young Jewish woman possessed by the wandering spirit of her predestined -- and deceased -- husband. Adapted from Jewish playwright S. Ansky's seminal work and directed by Todd Salovey, the performance features haunting music composed and performed by Yale Strom and members of Hot Pstromi. Our half price mezzanine seats were great. My friend whose daughters were in the cast warned me that it was very PG-13, and she was right. It is good for kids ages 12-14, but it was a little much for my younger daughter and her friends (10-11 years old). Their moms were a bit mortified by the subject matter and one even walked out at intermission.
Great cast with fun songs and a story that middle school kids can relate to, but I know it made some adults very uncomfortable. Fun, but a bit awkward!
An explosively funny original Broadway musical, 13 tells the story of Evan, a Jewish kid from New York whose parents’ divorce moves him to Indiana. As the new kid, Evan’s got to make friends, then determine if they are the “right” friends to have. All the while, he works to get the cool kids to his Bar Mitzvah. This “grown-up musical about growing up” is presented by CYC Theatre, the company that brought you “RENT” last summer.
