Playwright Henrik Ibsen's timeless 1879 masterwork is brought to life by the Mesa College Theatre Company, and acted, designed, built and crewed by drama department students. In A Doll's House, a woman's pampered life as a wife and mother is turned upside down when a secret from her past threatens to destroy her seemingly-idyllic life. Ibsen's classic play is considered ahead of its time for its portrayal of a woman's search for self-worth in an unhappy marriage.

Kris Clark's adaptation of "A Doll House" you might have read in high school. The play presented in traditional costume is long without warning. Two intermissions and 2.5 hours of steady wisper and understated characters takes it's toll on the audience. From it's silent uneventful opening to it's drawn-out close, you'll want to jump up and show the actors yourself how to deliver a line.

The show has some creativity with children being brought out on stage as dolls but the set is awkward with an unbelievable off stage architecture. The acting is not emotive and lacks the cynical paternalism of the era. I'd enjoy the play more if all the actors were dolls or puppets. To that end, if you're going to modernize a play then go all out and reconceptualize the entire experience. The ticket price is right but only for the die hard Ibsen fan.

The venue is somewhat difficult to find. Parking permission is unclear. Theatre is comfortable. Seating was open. The set design was average, although the piano placement was awkward. The acting overall was average and somewhat lackluster, which made an already lengthy show seem even longer. The costumes were the highlight of the show. Fake sideburns, the lowlight. This production deserves a strong cast with good dramatic skills to do it justice. Overall average.

Excellent college production. One of Mesa College's best. 3 acts and it kept my attention for 2.5 hours.
