Stephen Sondheim's Witty, Romantic A Little Night Music from Cygnet Theatre Company

Title: A Little Night Music
Venue: Cygnet at Old Town Theatre (San Diego, CA)
Full Price: $23.00 - $37.00   Our Price: FREE - $18.50
Rating: 3.2 stars

Rated 3.2 by 131 members who went.

One of Broadway's seldom produced masterpieces, A Little Night Music is sophisticated, literate and stylish, but also disarmingly warm, funny, charming and very human. Stephen Sondheim's most romantic and achingly beautiful score is written entirely in Ravel-inspired variations on the waltz and includes Sondheim's most popular song to date, the haunting "Send in the Clowns."

This is what Musical Theatre aspires to be in San Diego. I attended a preview and it was amazing. Sean Murray, the artistic director, always presents brilliant productions. Normally when you see shows that star the director, the production or the individual performance suffers, but this is not the case. This show is filled with top-notch performances and one of Sondheim's best scores. The scenes flow into each other effortlessly and the great quintet moves the action right along.
This was an amazing production to use as Cygnet's innaugural show at the Theatre in Old Town. Can't wait to see what's down the line. KUDOS to all involved!!!!!

We were in the very last row, corner (Row I), couldn't see the stage, and it was hotter than _____ with the theater not having any ventilation and the temperature outside being very hot. Many people were fanning themselves with the program. My husband actually had sweat dripping on his face and he is in shape. We left at the intermission—would have before but would have inconvenienced other people and feared tripping on the steps. The cast was very good and the play was fun, but the conditions were very, very poor and seats similar. A bargain is one thing—-but worst seats in a nonventilated hot place—no thank you.

More Details About This Event:

There never has been a weekend in the country quite like this, as loves are lost, found, yearned for and sent packing to the tune of some of the most breathtaking songs ever written, including the classic "Send in the Clowns." Sophisticated and stylish, this musical based on Ingmar Bergman’s "Smiles of a Summer Night" abounds with wit as romantic liaisons are played out beneath the mysterious night lights of Sweden at the turn of the century.
