At the run-down Desert Knight hotel in Palm Springs, former Hollywood "manager to the stars" Dee Dee Windom has died, and a colorful cast of characters returns to pay their respects and unearth a few secrets while they're at it. In its heyday, the Desert Knight was a place where Hollywood's closeted stars could enjoy their trysts in private and Windom herself was "a slut of Olympic proportions." The new comedy Coming Attractions, which explores both the meaning of family and the end of an era, is the latest world premiere by award-winning author Zsa Zsa Gershick whose play Bluebonnet Court was a hit when it played the MOXIE in 2008. Lorraine Hansberry was a genius. What a wonderful script (New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Play), still as authentic today as when she wrote it half a century ago. The performances by Mark Christopher Lawrence and the woman who played the grandmother/matriach of the family were amazing. I jumped to my feet when those two took their bows, and I don't often do that. A couple of the other actors were not as strong, but on the whole, a very enjoyable experience.Written on Feb 13 2012

Great acting and message. Enjoyed it a lot. A bit too long, especially with an 8pm start time (for us active seniors, 7 or 7:30 would be preferable)Written on Feb 03 2012

My friend and I were blown away! The set was authentic and warm. The acting was superb, nuanced, and powerful. Moxie worked its usual magic to bring Ms. Hansberry's classic drama to vivid life. Standing ovation for all involved! Bravo!!!Written on Feb 28 2012

Description
The February 29 at 8pm preview performance is followed by a post-show discussion with Dr. Charles Toombs of SDSU's Africana Studies Department.
When A Raisin in the Sun premiered on Broadway in 1959, playwright Lorraine Hansberry was just 29 years old. There was a lot on the line when the curtain went up that night. She was one of the youngest playwrights to have been produced on Broadway and the first African American. The director of the production was the first African American director to have worked on Broadway. Hansberry’s play, which depicted the struggles and dreams of an African American family, could potentially shatter a glass ceiling for female and African American Theatre artists. Hansberry must have felt the weight of those who had struggled before her, and those who would struggle after her, on her shoulders that night. She died just five years later, never getting to see how her play changed the face of American theatre forever and became a part of the cannon of classic American literature taught to students across the country. MOXIE is proud to present a thrilling production of A Raisin in the Sun and to reintroduce audiences to the female playwright who was a pioneer in American theatre.
A Raisin in the Sun tells the story of a family living and struggling on Chicago's South Side in the 1950s. It’s an incredibly moving play about the power of dreaming in the face of adversity. MOXIE’s production is helmed by Delicia Turner Sonnenberg and an astounding cast of local actors including Mark Christopher Lawrence, of NBC’s hit series Chuck as Walter Younger. Sonnenberg, one of San Diego’s most acclaimed directors, brings back other members of award-winning ensembles she directed in Fences and The Piano Lesson at Cygnet Theatre, including Sylvia M’Lafi Thompson as Mamma/Lena Younger and Laurence Brown as Asagai.
“When I read the play again, I was first reminded of the things that have changed since the 1950s, but I was more inspired by the things in the play that haven’t changed, for better or for worse,” says Sonnenberg. “The Youngers are a family reaching for the American dream. They want a home, they want education for their children, they want to own their own business, but those dreams feel out of their reach no matter how hard they work. I hope audiences will find themselves reflected in the play. I did. And I find myself astounded again at Hanberry’s brilliant characters and storytelling.”
