The La Jolla Music Society welcomes the Arturo O'Farrill Afro-Latin Septet. The groundbreaking group follows in the musical footsteps of O'Farrill's father, legendary bandleader Chico, who began introducing Afro-Cuban rhythms to jazz in the 1940s. A Grammy-winning pianist and composer in his own right, Arturo O'Farrill created the Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra in 2002, leading to an appearance on a PBS broadcast of the acclaimed show Live at Lincoln Center and playing regular gigs in residency at New York's famed Birdland club. Arrive early for a pre-concert chat with O'Farrill and Jazz88's Claudia Russell.

Excellent musicians, but somehow the performance lacked sparkle. Pacing did not vary much and the melodies were hard to find. Trumpet had a sweet sound, but the saxophone was too bee-boppy for my tastes.

La Jolla Music Society is proud to present Arturo O'Farrill Afro-Latin Septet. Pianist, composer, educator and winner of the Latin Jazz USA Outstanding Achievement Award for 2003, Arturo was born in Mexico and grew up in New York City. In 2002, he created the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra for Jazz at Lincoln Center due in part to a large and very demanding body of substantial music in the genre of Latin and Afro Cuban Jazz that deserves to be much more widely appreciated and experienced by the general jazz audience. His debut album with the Orchestra Una Noche Inolvidable earned a Grammy® award nomination in 2006.

The prelude featuring Claudia Russell from Jazz88 interviewing Arturo O'Farrill begins at 7:00pm. This show will have one intermission.
