City Ballet of San Diego presents Bravo! Balanchine, featuring three pieces by George Balanchine. Who Cares?, set to the music of George Gershwin, portrays the exuberance of America and of Manhattan, in particular. Agon is a ballet for 12 dancers, with music by Igor Stravinsky. This storyless piece features pairs, trios and quartets of dancers interacting, with several of the dances inspired by 17th-century French court dances. Finally, Donizetti Variations is a cheerful, sunny piece originally created for New York City Ballet's celebration of the 100th anniversary of Italy's unification.

This was my first time seeing Balanchine-choreographed dance, so I didn't know what to expect. The pieces from "Who Cares?" and "Donizetti Variations" were quite traditional to the point of being boring, but I found "Agon" positively delightful. Fresh, even, which is impressive considering it premiered in 1957. I don't mind sitting through some classical pieces as long as there's something more interesting along with them, but according to my companion, "Dance isn't a buffet -- I don't want to eat as much as I can."
