Voted "San Diego's Best Nutcracker" by San Diego Dance Alliance Tommy Awards, and described as "a plum of a Nutcracker," by the San Diego Union-Tribune, City Ballet's 19th annual Nutcracker returns to the historic Spreckels Theatre in downtown San Diego. This lavish production is fashioned after the choreography of the great Russian master Lev Ivanov who created the very first Nutcracker more than 100 years ago. Virtuoso dancing is complemented by opulent sets, costumes and Pyotr Tchaikovsky's brilliant score performed live by The City Ballet Orchestra with John Nettles conducting. The cast is made up of professionals from the City Ballet company, with children's roles performed by the top talent from the City Ballet School. This beloved holiday ballet follows young Clara on an exciting Christmas night journey through an enchanted dreamworld, where she encounters the Nutcracker Prince, fights epic battles and travels to the magical kingdom of the Sugar Plum Fairy. Carmina Burana was one of the best performances I've ever seen of anything, and this from a former Metropolitan Opera Subscription holder. Music/orchestra, gorgeous. Choreography, exceptional. Dancers, wonderful. Costumes, fabulous. Chorus/choir stunningly beautiful. Didn't know we had this kind of talent in San Diego. A memoralbe evening. The only issue was that we almost did not get in. The lady at will call was distracted with her friend's earrings. She turned away from us to admire them and talk to her. She could not find us on the Goldstar list, even though I had the Golstar receipt in hand. She just didn't really care. Had no interest in providing customer support. She had the attention span of a gnat and maybe the intelligece as well. . She offered an enfeebled--well, you will have to make a phone call etc. We finally insisted on her attention as curtain time was fast approaching, and she went through her entire package of pages and found us. Fire this bunch! With help as insultingly pathetic the performance would have to be spectacular to erase this entrance. If this persists, no one will be able to get into see the performances. My nine year old granddaughters are friendlier and have more focus than these ditsy broads. Patrons keep these performances in business-- if you want to excess over your friends jewelry, take her to coffee sometime. I know a bunch of teenagers who are looking for part time job! We were told she was a Ballet employee, so no criticism to Goldstar, with whom I am very grateful for allowing me to get tickets to this terrific evening.
