This venue is horrible; airplanes passing directly overhead every 1 or 2 minutes. But we knew this, really wanted to see this play & had a previous experience at the theater when the performance was excellent. Not this time! It was so amateurish, we've seen school performances more professionally done. It was all bad, but the worst part was the male lead, whose supposed to carry the show. Our favorite part of the play was watching the airplanes land; we actually started looking forward to the interruptions. Not for long, though. We left mid-way through the 1st act.

We've seen many performances at StarLight Bowl... this was probably the worst one. We felt the female lead was woefully miscast and it was painful to listen to her and watch her.
We'll try Starlight again, but were definitely NOT impressed with this event.

Dancing Rose

This was a wonderful, entertaining, well-done musical by some very talented performers. Both the female lead and male lead were good strong clear vocalists who hit every note. They did a great job with the dance numbers as well. In fact, I thought the female lead, Laurie Hymes, was especially adorable — very expressive. FUN! The Starlight Theatre is a unique venue and the freeze action/flight path scene is part of the tradition. I wouldn't have it any other way. I feel like I must have not have seen the same show as some of the negative reviewers! As always, Goldstar provided a wonderful experience. Thanks for a wonderful evening! :-)

More Details About This Event:

Crazy for You is the story of Bobby Child, a well-to-do 1930s playboy whose dream in life is to dance. And despite the serious efforts of his mother and soon-to-be-ex-fiancee, Bobby achieves his dream! Memorable Gershwin tunes include "I Can't Be Bothered Now," "Bidin' My Time," "I Got Rhythm," "Naughty Baby," "They Can't Take That Away from Me," "But Not for Me," "Nice Work if You Can Get It," "Embraceable You" and "Someone to Watch Over Me."

About Starlight Theatre:

Since its inception, Starlight has presented 59 seasons of musical theatre productions for the entertainment of more than four million San Diegans and visitors. These seasons have encompassed nearly 1000 productions of 120 different musicals, ranging from the operettas of Gilbert & Sullivan and Jacques Offenbach, the Rodgers & Hammerstein classics Carousel and South Pacific, favorites of the 50's and 60's such as West Side Story, Guys & Dolls, and Peter Pan, and the contemporary Broadway blockbusters A Chorus Line, Dreamgirls, Follies and Phantom of the Opera.

About Starlight Bowl at Balboa Park:

Balboa Park's beautiful outdoor amphitheater has been home to Starlight Musical Theatre's summer shows since the late 1940s -- but back then the actors didn't have to coordinate with airplane noise. The 4,000-seat bowl is in the flight path to Lindbergh Field, and it's a San Diego tradition for the actors to freeze in their pose in mid-song as the planes pass overhead.
