Bellydance Evolution takes the much-loved story of Alice in Wonderland to the next level in this reimagined dance version that incorporates world fusion and hip-hop dance. The colorful, crazy characters of Wonderland come to life in a whole new way, giving a fresh burst of soul and energy to the almost 50-year-old tale of a young girl who falls down a rabbit hole and finds herself on the adventure of a lifetime: chasing a talking rabbit, taking tea with a Mad Hatter and facing up to the fearsome Queen of Hearts. This was my first time watching a performance by City Ballet and I enjoyed it.
The first act drags on a little, since it is more mime and acting than dancing, but it is needed to set the story up for the second act. The peasant costumes, while pretty, I found them perhaps a bit constraining to the dancers.
But all changed in the second act. That dream-like quality that makes ballet so appealing was achieved with the simplicity of the costumes, the stage and lighting, and really good dancers.
The costumes for the Wilis allowed no room to hide bad technique. It was great to see the strength and training of the dancers manifest on stage. There was consistency of point work, the height of legs in arabesques, etc... The dancers in general seemed much more in tune with the music and comfortable with the roles.
I liked having a live orchestra (makes such a richer experience), but have a feeling that the acoustics of the theatre rob the sounds a bit of its potential.
Overall, a very good performance, and definitely plan on seeing future performances.
