MOXIE Theatre presents the West Coast premiere of Marisa Wegrzyn's dark, magical and wickedly funny comedy Hickorydickory. Awarded the Wendy Wasserstein Prize for Drama in 2009, Hickorydickory is a new turn for Wegrzyn, who wanted to explore fantasy without the lightness and whimsy usually associated with the genre. Her story has all the blood and guts of reality, with a magical twist. Hickorydickory imagines that we are all born with a mortal clock that measures our days on earth. For most of us, this clock is hidden in our hearts where we never know of its existence. But for an unfortunate few, the clock is located in their brain, where they hear it ticking away, constantly. Dale is a member of that unlucky group and when she investigates the source of the ticking in her head, she'll discover the truth about her parents' hidden past and the clock repair shop she's called home. This dark comedy serves as a compelling examination of the time we have and the people we love enough to give it to.

By the Way, Meet Vera Stark: Sly Satire Skewers Hollywood Racism

Full Price:
$43.00 - $55.00
Our Price:
$21.50 - $27.50

Set in Hollywood over a 70-year period, Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage's pseudo-biographical comedy By the Way, Meet Vera Stark follows the life of a headstrong African-American actress who begins a career in the 1930s, at a time when her only shot at success lay in stealing small scenes in big Hollywood blockbusters. Seventy years later, film buffs reflect on the life and legacy of the controversial star, whose eventual fame and fortune came at the price of perpetuating dangerous stereotypes. Nottage artfully blends comedy and social commentary for a thoroughly entertaining yet thought-provoking picture of the cultural climate that shaped Vera Stark. Clever and illuminating, this show draws on screwball films of the 1930s and uses today's fascination with celebrity and controversy to get to the truth behind the legend, and reflect on who she might have been if she'd lived in a different time. This was the second time I attended this show. I thought it was excellent and very thought provoking as well as very funny at times. Also sad at times. I loved everything about it!

This play should be for my mature audiences only. I brought my 15 year old daughter and she was disturbed by the language and some obscene gestures and scenes.

It is magical realism so if you're not into that you might not like it. I found it extremely well done and very entertaining. The actors were outstanding and I enjoyed the way the flashbacks in time were handled.
