Suzan-Lori Parks' In the Blood, a New Spin on The Scarlet Letter
North Park Vaudeville Theatre (San Diego, CA)
Rated 4.0 by 1 members who went.
In the Blood is Suzan-Lori Parks' riff on Nathaniel Hawthorne's novel The Scarlet Letter, in which the heroine is persecuted by the town for having a child out of wedlock. In this raw look at poverty and homelessness in the inner city, Hester La Negrita raises her five children while dealing with individuals who constantly victimize her.

More Details
In the world of Suzan-Lori Parks’ In the Blood, single motherhood is everywhere, poverty is everywhere, help is short and exploitation by people in the system is common. The heroine, Hester La Negrita, suffers at the hands of her unsympathetic community, whose disapproval of her is largely based on her poverty.
The playwright Ms. Parks was the first black woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for her play Topdog/Underdog.
