Shakespeare's R & J: Joe Calarco's Riveting Drama-Within-a-Drama

Full Price:
$19.00 - $49.00
Our Price:
$9.50 - $24.50

Cygnet Theatre Company presents Shakespeare's R&J, which takes a musty old classic and gives it vibrant new life. Joe Calarco's passionate adaptation of Romeo and Juliet places the iconic story of youthful passion and feuding families in the hands of four boys -- students at a Catholic school where the play has been banned. Tired of their daily routine, they sneak away to take turns reading a copy of the forbidden text. As they play the roles, they are caught up in the story and real life forbidden passions are revealed. Presented in an intimate in-the-round style, with just the actors and the dialogue and no costume changes, props or sets, Shakespeare's R&J rips away your preconceptions of this much-produced tragedy and presents it in a modern and emotionally resonant new form. While each actor made their character(s) their own, there was also just enough similarity between what we saw on stage and what we remember from the movie that the delightful play in the mind between the two was super entertaining. The sound effect guy ROCKS! We invited out-of-town guests and they said their socks were blown off by the production--and we were heroes for introducing them to the Cygnet.

The movie is one of my favorites..The radio play was fantastic! The actors "nailed" it! Jimmy Stewart would be proud! The theatre is very intimate and the cast were very engaging...a must see again next year. Thanks for a very enjoyable New Year's Eve.

I felt like I'd walked into the 1940's but not in an overly shmaltzy way. From beginning to end the show was fun, heartfelt, and charming. Loved it!

This was a wonderful presentation of a much-loved holiday movie. We took our 12 year old son--who enjoyed it as much as we did. Great cast and performances by all. We look forward to taking others next year!
