Very nice and peaceful garden. Currently some construction going on, so the garden should be expanding through til 2017

Great peaceful place. Happy to see they have expanded the gardens- anxious to visit when they have completed construction on the lower level

Moving Moment: Baja’s Wildlife in Sumi
June 6, 2014 – August 3, 2014

“Moving Moment: Baja’s Wildlife in Sumi” features the Sumi-e (ink paintings) of Lauris Phillips. She describes the wild creatures of Baja California’s desert coast with expressive gestures of her handmade brushes. Evident is the heart of Sumi-e, the dance between effort and accident, which keeps this form perpetually in the present.

She explains: Movement is both an abstract visual consideration and an actual sign of life, including the sensation felt within when we say, “I am moved”.

Lauris is a native of San Diego County and spent several of her early years exploring Balboa Park when her father was Director at the Natural History Museum. It was with her father that she first experienced Baja and with her mother that she first traveled to Japan, initiating her interest in Japanese art and culture.

This collection of paintings is shaped by her early grounding in natural science, her university training in abstract expressionism, a decades long practice in Authentic Movement and her current practice of Zen Buddhism.

Included in this show is a collaborative, five panel piece for which Shaku Daijo, the priest at Daishu-in West Rinzai Zen Temple in Northern California, contributed a panel of calligraphy.

See the Garden website for updates to the schedule of exhibitions.
