Auntie Mame, the adored character of theatrical literature, comes to the Lyric stage for the first time in Jerry Herman's delightful musical Mame. Join Mame as she guides her young nephew, Patrick, through life in New York during the Depression era. Patrick grows into a young man even as the eccentric and irrepressible Mame struggles to be a fit mother. The show's score includes such memorable numbers as "Open A New Window," "We Need A Little Christmas," "You're My Best Girl," "Bosom Buddies" and, of course, the beloved title song. It's a theater treat the whole family can enjoy.

Performances were good, nothing spectacular. The show itself is a tad long and perhaps dated. My only concern was that Mame herself was the only person 'mic'd'. You could hear her over every one else and there were a couple of numbers where she performed with the little boy and you couldn't hear him or other members of the cast.

The show was terrific. Unfortunately, it closed yesterday, so anyone reading this review no longer has an opportunity to attend!

Lyric Theatre did their usual excellent job in presenting a major production. my only concern is that they do not use any type of mike system for the actors. fine for the lead, but the young people are difficult to hear and at times I had no idea what Patrick was saying. other than that, it was a good evening.

I hate to say anything negative about a Lyric production because I am just so grateful they are even existing here in town, but... Mame is a pleasant evening out but with nothing special to recommend it. This musical is champagne and ought to sparkle and intoxicate. Unfortunately this production is a little flat, with less fizz and more fizzle. The lead is sassy and lovely, but not particularly wild. She does a great turn with "If He Walked Into my Life" but her other numbers were mild. Leigh Scarritt, immensely talented, takes over all her scenes, but is sadly one dimensional. Why must such an amazing stage presence ALWAYS utilize her teeny tiny drag queen approach? She is SO much better than that. The other members of the cast are mostly adequate, with a few sad exceptions like Gloria and the Upsons, and Babcock. The costuming looks tired, and for heaven's sake, HOW could they make Mame look so stolidly shaped and matronly? The intrascenes, like the tango, are under used and poorly expositive. I love musical theater, and frankly love the Lyric, but their economising is showing, and badly. Please go see Mame, and anything else Lyric does, so they can have the money to put on the shows of which they are capable!
