Man of La Mancha, the Tony-winning musical that spawned one of the most famous and often-recorded songs of the 20th century -- "The Impossible Dream" -- opens the Cygnet Theatre's 2012-2013 season. From Robert Goulet, Frank Sinatra and Liberace to Elvis, Luther Vandross and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, Don Quixote's musical declaration of the unstoppable human spirit has inspired generations, as has the show itself. Set in the late 16th century, the author Miguel Cervantes awaits his hearing in the Spanish Inquisition and responds to a challenge from his fellow prisoners to re-enact his not-yet-famed story of the mad knight who lives in a world of his imagination and requited love. The Cygnet's own Sean Murray directs and stars as Cervantes. The show was last revived on Broadway in 2002, starring Tony nominee Brian Stokes Mitchell, and won five Tony Awards, including Best Musical, in its original run.

Shakespeare's R & J: Joe Calarco's Riveting Drama-Within-a-Drama

Full Price:
$29.00 - $49.00
Our Price:
$14.50 - $24.50

Cygnet Theatre Company presents Shakespeare's R&J, which takes a musty old classic and gives it vibrant new life. Joe Calarco's passionate adaptation of Romeo and Juliet places the iconic story of youthful passion and feuding families in the hands of four boys -- students at a Catholic school where the play has been banned. Tired of their daily routine, they sneak away to take turns reading a copy of the forbidden text. As they play the roles, they are caught up in the story and real life forbidden passions are revealed. Presented in an intimate in-the-round style, with just the actors and the dialogue and no costume changes, props or sets, Shakespeare's R&J rips away your preconceptions of this much-produced tragedy and presents it in a modern and emotionally resonant new form. Excellent cast and singing voices. Who's better than Sean Murray in the lead? No one. I saw this show many years ago with Richard Kiley in the lead. He was wonderful too, but Murray is even better.

What a fantastic rendition of Man of La Mancha. The music was amazing and as was the acting. The portrayal of Don Quixoite and Sancho Panza gave life to the lines of the play. Though I had seen it before, this version was fresh and invigorating.
