Abandoned at birth by her Chinese family, Jade McCullough was raised in America, always feeling like an outsider, never knowing whom her biological family was. Her only clue as to her past is half a jade heart that was found as an infant in her swaddling clothes. Shifting between reality and fantasy, Jade struggles to find herself and define her future with the woman she loves most, her single mother, and the mental image of the biological mother who deserted her. The Chicago Sun-Times called Jade Heart "rich in pathos and wit." Learn More

The author writes magical-realism works. Unusual things happen like talking cats, the moon represented by a man, and dream sequences interspersed with reality. The language is beautiful and poetic; the casting and acting are excellent. The central characters are an army sergeant and his wife trying to communicate their evolving needs to each other. Pay close attention, and you will be well rewarded by vibrant characters trying to communicate.
