We saw Paradise. I enjoyed the enthusiasm and the focus of the young people presenting this. I was impressed with the young director's ability, and the actor's presence, for the most part. I hate to be critical given their young age, but the young women especially could project better.
The content of the play was disturbing, in that it still reinforces dangerous cliches about Arabs and Palestinians being terrorists who hate Jews. it also seemed to convey in a very naive way that both sides are equally at fault...that hate and terrorism are the enemy. that is a very naive and simplified notion. I am sorry if that is the takeaway for young people today. 10 Palestinians are killed for every Jew. We need a two sided solution but that won't come without an increased understanding, framed with courage, about the nitty gritty of the power imbalance and the primary injustice done to the Palestinians by the Israelies backed by our tax dollars.
Even tho I was disappointed by the content of this play I love the idea of the "Spirit" series and strongly encourage it.
