CYC Theatre performs the first San Diego production of the full-score Les Misérables. This unedited production of one of the longest-running musicals in history is co-directed by Broadway's Thomas James O'Leary, the lead in Phantom of the Opera for over 1000 performances, and features a live, 40-piece orchestra and a cast combining seasoned professionals with up-and-coming performers from California Youth Conservatory. Based on the novel by Victor Hugo, Les Misérables tells the epic tale of ex-convict Jean Valjean's struggle for redemption in 19th-century France. Winner of eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical in its original Broadway run, the lush Boublil and Schönberg score features the classic songs "I Dreamed a Dream," "On My Own," "One Day More" and many others. Written on Dec 19 2011This was such an enchanting ballet experience. Alice in Wonderland was a wonderful mixture of classic ballet and a lot of modern dancing that was fun to watch for all ages. The children in the audience loved all the characters and the dancing was fantastic. Mixed Repertoire was very beautiful; especially the Latin segment. I hope I get the chance to see these again.
Written on Nov 06 2011The combination of ballet and a bit of hip hop makes all audiences be engage from beginning to end.
Written on Oct 17 2011A good family time show for me and two kids
Written on Oct 17 2011We loved this program, possibly even more than the children who were there. It was very innovative and delightful.
Written on Oct 17 2011I truly enjoyed both Alice: Wonderland and the Mixed Repertoire. I had never attended San Diego Ballet performances but was very impressed with the versatility and style. Will definitely go back for more!
Written on Oct 17 2011This was my first experience ordering tickets through Goldstar. I may never order tickets again as I did not appreciate not know where my tickets were when I ordered. Once I got there and saw the seats, I know why I did not enjoy ordering tickets without knowing their location. They were the last seats in the row before leaving the theater! Certainly not worth any price, discounted or otherwise! The ballet was well performed, but lost a lot by the location of our seats. Sorry, I think that I will never order tickets again from Goldstar unless I know what seats I'm getting.
Written on Oct 17 2011I loved the music and the hip-hop dancers. I wasn't too impressed by the ballet. The theater is great. It seems like every seat in the house would be good.
Written on Oct 17 2011The dancers seemed rather inexperienced, and the choreography was at times rather arbitrary, if not, completely unclear (i.g. the lion and the unicorn?). Otherwise it was a very fun and colorful performance!
Written on Oct 17 2011The Alice Ballet was really good. The other two added performance were not as entertaining and my 10 year old granddaughter fell asleep. She said she wanted to stay, though, so we did.
Written on Oct 17 2011fantastic, fun and very entertaining for the whole family.
Alice was extremly good.
hip hop dancers very good and a surprize at the ballet..really excellent dancing by the whole cast.
all the seats at the Lyceum are good, even the last row!
Written on Oct 17 2011Fabulous variety of music and dance performed with verve and skill.
Written on Oct 17 2011The ballet was okay. The set was a bit disappointing, but the costumes were very nice. What I wasn't expecting was that the Alice in Wonderland portion of the show was only the first half. After the intermission another short dance piece was presented followed by another intermission then another short, unrelated piece. Honestly, the last piece was my favorite, even if unexpected. I just wish they had focused more energy on making the Alice in Wonderland portion an awesome show, instead of dividing their energy on three mediocre pieces. The theater is nice and I had great seats. Bar is cash only though :(
Written on Oct 17 2011Great mix of classic and modern ballet...enhanced by great urband dancing. Amazing show. Amazing dancers!!!

Description
Alice: Wonderland was the second ballet created in the nine-year collaboration between SDB, Culture Shock San Diego and Young Audiences of San Diego. Other pieces have included Carnival of the Animals and Firebird. Alice: Wonderland features not just Velasco’s modern/ballet fusion staging but hip-hop dance performed by San Diego’s first and finest hip-hop crew, Culture Shock San Diego. Says Velasco, “When the music starts, it’s just impossible not to get swept up in the mystery and magic of the story. It was a natural choice for us, fun for audiences of all ages. “
Also on the program will be the world premiere of two new pieces, the sultry Echale Salsita and the classical Suite Italienne.
Echale Salsita is Spanish for “Throw on some hot sauce.” “We have a group of new dancers with the company this year,” says Velasco. “I wanted to give them something that they could show off a bit in and also allow me (and our audience) to get to know them as dancers. I was listening to NPR in the car and heard this great jazzy, Afro-Cuban lounge music. It’s the kind of stuff I use a lot, but darker. It seemed like a great way to initiate the newbies to life at SDB and our rep.”
Suite Italienne is set to Stravinsky’s piano and violin concerto of the same name. “When people think of Stravinsky they either think of the lush sounds of Firebird or the dissonance of his later works,” says Velasco. “But this little gem has an enormous amount of clarity, and intimacy, AND beautiful melodies. I keep coming back to this piece over and over, but for some reason it hasn’t been able to make it into our programming. I love it because it doesn’t try too hard. It just sort of flows out like a clear stream. And yes, it’s going to be a tutu ballet. Classical… and romantic.”
