We always enjoy the Symphony, always love Maestro Hamlisch, and Ms. Budd was okay. Unfortunately, they were messing with the acoustics, and - from the mezz - it was impossible to hear anything they said. Many near-by concert goers were muttering about the problem with the acoustics. The music was fun, and always wonderful. Thank you! I was very happy to be able to attend the Symphony!Written on Nov 09 2009

It was one of those nights at the beautiful Copley Hall when you feel the classiness in the air, as well as the medium age circling around 50 years 'younger' than my date and I. Twenty-year-old Barbra fans are hard to come by apparently.Written on Nov 10 2009
Marvin Hamlisch was amazing, pushing his wit to the maximum in order to make those awkardly dull moments between pieces funny... or at least digestible. I do think he was the highlight of the night, especially with his performance of his "The Way We Were" on the piano. Truly a gift to everyone there. His decision to have the San Diego Symphony open with the Overture to Barbra's 1994 concert tour was superb... couldn't have asked for a better opening.
The San Diego Symphony seemed a bit too robotic and out of its territory with Barbra; they sounded like Beethoven purists pushing their way into "Don't Rain on my Parade" with trepidation. It felt as if these superb musicians are far too into the classical realm to even consider the words "I'll march my band out / I'll beat my drum."
As for Ms. Budd... well, she is a master of her voice when it comes to the songs that she usually sings ("Hymne a l'amour", etc.). But when it comes to the Barbra repertoire, she seemed to either want to channel Barbra literally or totally lost. I think the unexpected Barbra drag queen had more stage presence and a better feel for the songs than Ms. Budd. The audience's applause was a clear marker as to who was more of a Barbra than the other.

Kudos only to the orchestra! Unfortunately, the sound system was a mess from the get-go. Numerous complaints were made to house management, and altho it got somewhat better following intermission, it was still lacking! Very difficult to hear b4 intermission, then blaring following. The singer's voice was like nails on a chalk board--YIKES!Written on Nov 09 2009
