Diversionary Theatre will present the 1998 Terrence McNally play Corpus Christi as the sixth and final show of its season. Named one of the best plays of the year by Time Magazine in 1998, this vivid and moving passion play is a contemporary telling of the life of Jesus as if he were a gay man and grew up in 1950s Texas.

The new guy on the scene!

The actors and actresses were very talented and played their parts well. It was the actual script that I felt fell short of its potential. There were parts I was thrilled with but the whole script fell short of coming together in a cohesive manner.
With that said, I appreciated the attempt. To tell the story of Jesus Christ in a new way that makes thousands of years old verses come to life and be accessible to a modern audience, is a tough task to say the least. What Christ did for us is so incomprehensible that no one could possibly tell it in a way that we could wrap our minds fully around it. This portrays one person's view of how things might have been and for that I applaud the effort.
I was disappointed that the play did not spend more time examining the stereotypes of its setting, 1950's Corpus Christi TX and tell the story from that lens. 1950's Texas and Roman Centurions do not mix. What the play attempted to do, was mix the two, or overlay the Christ story on a modern back drop and I felt it fell short of this. So much more could have been done with a modern day Jesus figure on the margins ministering to the marginalized crucified by a hate crime. At the very same time by portraying both the aspects of the ancient story (in its Scriptural form) and the modern setting, it does beg the audience to ask how the two relate, who is the Centurion, Pharisee , who is Jesus for us in our own society?
Anytime you try to re-tell the story of Jesus it is going to be controversial. I had hoped that nothing would be done in this play simply for the shock value, but what would be shocking would be the presentation of Jesus outside the box of traditional lenses. However some moments I believe were shocking just for the sake of shock and added nothing to the script itself.
This play is certainly thought provoking and will definitely stir the emotions. It is powerful as it would have to be telling the story that it is telling and the troupe plays the Life and Passion with great life and passion. The lead man Bowles certainly has an acting future ahead of him and showed extraordinary talent.

Theatre junkie'

Good nite of entertainment for the price. Also the lead character is only a senior high school student and he is excellent in his role, as well as all the others sharing the stage.
