The Marriage Bed, a Look at Same Sex Marriage at Diversionary Theatre
Diversionary Theatre (San Diego, CA)
The Marriage Bed, a play by Nona Shepphard about same-sex marriage, was a hit in London, Hong Kong, and New York. Now, it makes its West Coast debut. Originally written in response to the British government's passage of the Civil Partnership Act in 2005, the play takes a comedic yet touching look at two women who are very much in love but -- ironically --also very ambivalent about their newfound freedom to commit to each other for life.

We had never been to this venue before and I wanted to do something different. The price was perfect and the time slot was great too!
The venue is one where there does not appear to be a bad seat in the house. We sat in the second row near the center. The seating is all general/open seating. We found the seats to be 'narrow'...(we could both drop a pound or several ;-)), but not uncomfortable or distracting...
For us it was easily accessible. Parking can be a challenge in this area of town but we got there early and began our night with tapas and drinks at Lei Lounge.
I loved the play. When I thought of how I would describe it, the words 'beautifully human' came to mind. I laughed and I cried ( I wasn't the only one wiping tears!)
I am easily distracted by things ...things that I find annoying...I did not find myself distracted by anything that I can think of... like lighting, or ambient noise, or weird props, nothing... I did find Val's British accent a little difficult to follow at times, but it added a charm to her performance that I appreciated.
Had we gotten there earlier and read the playbill, I might have been less caught up when certain events or terms were referred to. There are events and phrases described in the "Glossary for the Marriage Bed" section that I think help you get less caught up when she, Val, describes these things.
I liked the no intermission (go to the bathroom before you get there!) as it kept things moving along and kept the night open to still do dessert and coffee!
-- I really enjoyed the performance. I would actually pay to see it again ;-).

A worthwhile outting. The well-written and witty script gave way for many laughs (and it is not easy to make me laugh, haha). The actresses were great, versatile, and funny. No intermission, this was a short play, though it was so good I wished it went on longer. Kudos to the character of Val, she was amazing! I highly recommend this play!

This play was extremely well performed. In such an intimate setting the actors must carry out the play amidst the audience and these women did a wonderful job. The play itself is meaningful and most people can relate with the roller coaster of emotions we feel when we are in love and deciding whether or not to enter into a "legal contract" of relationship. I recommend this play.

Jeni loves Val and Val loves Jeni. But is that enough reason to get married, especially when you’re not sure your girlfriend is over her ex, and one of you is not out to your family?
Once the United Kingdom approved civil partnerships in 2005, same-sex couples had to ask themselves: “Do I want to make a commitment? Do we want to make a big splash? If so, what sort of splash? Shall it be the pink limousines, or shall we walk? Shall we invite my mother? (If she says no, it will make me feel really awful and spoil the day.) Do I want to be formally tied to another person?”
All this and a fourposter bed! Reynolds has directed The Twilight of the Golds, Beautiful Thing and Wrinkles, among others for Diversionary.
Underwritten by Joann Clark.
