Showcasing Cole Porter's signature wit and masterful composition, Roundabout Theatre Company's Tony-winning production of Anything Goes features beloved songs such as "I Get a Kick Out of You" and "You're the Top." This timeless tale of boy-meets-girl and the resulting roller coaster ride centers on Billy Crocker, who falls hopelessly in love with a wealthy heiress. When he sees her boarding a boat to London, he throws caution to the wind and becomes a stowaway. Madcap hijinks ensue when his fellow passengers, including the evangelist-turned-nightclub-singer Reno Sweeney and second-rate gangster Moonface Martin, decide to help Billy win his true love. view more less of this reviewFine cast, excellent stage design and direction, but not much of a story to chew on. Emotionally raw and extremely shallow youth arrives at sharp-minded grandmother's New York City apartmet; a little culture clash humor; a final confession of what bothers him (played out as a gag about hearing aids), and off they go to the funeral of a neighbor.
star this review starred report as inappropriateAlthough the set was beautiful, the actors were no better than what I would expect from community theater. They were competent but there was a lack of depth in their portrayals. The play was also a problem. Go if you want to see some light fluff that will not challenge you or upset you in any way.
At one point the kid tells grannie to "fuck off". This could have been a juncture for some great healing, some bonding and catharsis. Unfortunately, the playwright passed up this opportunity and just went on with her banal way, prattling on about past girlfriends.
star this review starred report as inappropriateIt grappled with very interesting themes, aging, finding adult identity and dealing with loss. The acting was of a high caliber, however the play would have benefited by being 15 minutes shorter as it is written or some themes alluded to should have been fleshed out.
