From the Tony-winning creator of Falsettos and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee comes a truly adult musical about trust, forgiveness and frog hallucinations. Based on his true-life brush with death, William Finn's sung-through story is equally funny and touching.

This show is a little rough, but cute. The lead is very charming and I have seen him before at the New Conservatory and found him just as charming. The supporting cast, especially the mother, was very good. I don't know that I came out of the theater humming any of the songs, but I did think about the show through the weekend.

I'm imagining that Finn went through an experience like the one told in this show as the show has an autobiographical ring to it. It has a humorously honest feel to it.

I have never been to this theater before, and when I heard that it was on the second floor of a building on Mission before 5th and 6th, I had some reservations, but I was very impressed with the production. I will definitely give this venue another try.

We really LOVED this production of this nearly unknown musical. A tiny theater company came up with a true winner that we were pleasantly blown away by. Wanted to give a standing o!

Nothing against the performers or the production. Just bad material.

Quotes & Highlights

  • "Apt and original...A fascinating story." --New York Post

  • "Filled with beguiling, buoyant melody [and] witty and original lyrics...The kind of musical theatre invention we have come to expect from this gifted artist." --InTheatre

Description

A New Brain is an energetic, sardonic, uplifting, and often comical musical about a composer during a medical emergency.

Gordon is very frustrated. He spends his days writing songs for a children’s TV show that is “draining what is left of his talent.” One day, Gordon collapses into his lunch and awakes in the hospital surrounded by his maritime-enthusiast lover, his mother, a co-worker, the doctor and the nurses, and a certain frog named Mr. Bungie. Just in time, death comes near to remind him that life is not about prizes and fame, but making the most of his “time and music.”

Featuring such timeless songs as “Sailing” and “Time and Music,” A New Brain is a love story about living life in the present while not taking for granted those who wait for us at the end of our darkest travels.

A musical by William Finn and James Lapine
Directed by Brian Katz
