Set in 1960s Manchester, England, this poignant and comic play tells the story of Jo, a shy 17-year-old chafing against the constraints of her life in a working-class slum and the demands of her selfish, irresponsible mother, Helen. Helen soon deserts her daughter for a lover, but the tenacious Jo navigates romance, heartbreak, and poverty, never losing her sense of humor and optimism. Shelagh Delaney's first play was considered controversial in its time for its racial and sexual themes, but its powerful evocation of mid-century British life has made it an enduring masterpiece. Laura Lundy-Paine for the Virago Theatre Co.

Rather amateurish and some bad casting. I usually like these actors but not in this show.

Faithful reproduction of the original book - but most of the actors need to work on their Salfordian accents (this reviewer is from Salford). We would have been happy to pay more for these tickets. We highly recommend this play,

The actors all did an outstanding job with the late playwright Shelagh Delaney's play, "A Taste of Honey," that she wrote at eighteen.

Brigette Lundy-Paine, a senior in high school, carried the lead with flying colors. She moves the talents of all her fellow seasoned actors around her. Brigette brings rhythm and sets the pace continuously throughout the play. Mark my words, one day Brigette Lundy-Paine might be synonymous with Meryl Streep.

The Thick House is an intimate theatre, located in Potrero Hill, San Francisco. The lighting, sounds and 60's costumes was right on. The set construction and prop decorations was really well thought out and executed by Julie Gillespie.
