When a seemingly casual conversation between a husband and wife reveals a sadistic affair, the couple embarks on a sinister journey into the past. Devlin wants to get to the bottom of his wife's possible infidelity. Her lover -- past? present? -- is a violent, powerful man whose emotional hold reaches deep into Rebecca's psyche. Rather slow and I think I just wasn't in the mood for it. I kept nodding off. Was glad when it was over.Written on Apr 30 2010

There are many reasons why Hold Pinter won the Nobel prize for literature in 2005, and "Ashes to Ashes" is one of them. As "Ashes" displays, Pinter's work stands out as one of the most provocative voices of recent generations.Written on Apr 23 2010
Ashes, a one act play, was originally performed in 1996, and had critically acclaimed runs in London and New York. The play opens with Devlin, a professor, and Rebecca talking in the living room. The Second Wind Production, now at the Pheonix Theater off of Union Square, takes place in a penthouse apartment, NYC; the year 2001; the World Trade Center seen from the apartment skyline. The WTC, presumably, a reminder of forces still at large, and such forces are at the razor-sharp, iron fist, subtext often wedging in the relationship of Devlin and Rebecca. Lol Levy, in particular, and Lisa-Marie Newton, each bring precision to their impressive performances. ,
Space and time are short. Ihis is an excellent production; of course, Pinter is serious theater, the dialogue at times obtuse, angular, nonsequitor, but this work is accessible and provocative.
Those who say "well-done" Pinter is not found on this side of the pond need a trip to the Bay, as "Ashes", in my opinion, is the third well done Pinter I have seen in the States; the others hitting the mark: "Betrayal", Actors Theater, SF; and "The Birthday Party", Auroura Theater, Berkeley. And yes, I have seen Pinter on Broadway (including the somewhat recent "Homecoming), Off, and Off Off, and other, but not all, Pinter in the Bay area in recenr years. Perhaps it is the intimate nature of theater here or perhaps some other [-pause-] obtuse character, which i cannot grasp [ . . . long pause . . . ] in hand.

I'm sorry, I never quite "got this play". The program shared very little about what to expect. It was a lot of he said she said and I must say the female actress was brilliant in her delivery, but it never clicked for me and I walked out saying "huh"!Written on Apr 19 2010

A passable performance overall.Rebecca did not have a English accent and Devlin did. This discrepancy was distracting.Written on Jul 08 2010
