San Francisco Performances presents the return of the internationally celebrated Israeli contemporary dance company Batsheva at Novellus Theater at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. They'll perform Max, a recent work by Artistic Director Ohad Naharin that emphasizes the theatrical use of movement, space and light. The piece expounds on and celebrates the potential of the human body and the possibilities of choreography in a powerful tour de force of formalism and technical mastery. The work is performed by ten dancers and features the "Gaga" technique, a movement language developed by Naharin that is geared toward exploring new ways to move the body. Named after a baby's first words, it enables recognition of one's own movement habits and the acquisition of new ones. Batsheva has become a favorite of San Francisco audiences after a successful debut in 2003 and performances in 2006.

Intense. Seemed like watching a tribal right of passage ceremony.

Batsheva provides a unique, controlled and fascinating performance. The dancers are amazing--and their form of modern dance quite memorable.

Full of intensity, rigor, explosive and powerful dance. This is a great piece to take young, hip, maybe not so dance savvy people to. It isn't for everyone-- if you prefer something more lyrical and "beautiful" you may find yourself bored or unfulfilled. But this is major dancing and an important part of what's going on in the world of dance right now.
