Working-Class British Drama A Taste of Honey

Set in 1960s Manchester, England, this poignant and comic play tells the story of Jo, a shy 17-year-old chafing against the constraints of her life in a working-class slum and the demands of her selfish, irresponsible mother, Helen. Helen soon deserts her daughter for a lover, but the tenacious Jo navigates romance, heartbreak, and poverty, never losing her sense of humor and optimism. Shelagh Delaney's first play was considered controversial in its time for its racial and sexual themes, but its powerful evocation of mid-century British life has made it an enduring masterpiece. It was OK. Some of the plays seemed a bit far out and cryptic. Not my favorate.

Not good, no redeming social value. I will not return to this theater. This is the second time I was disapointed here.

3.5 stars. I really enjoyed this as you can get a bunch of pretty good short plays all in one night. Great if you have a short attention span or if you are tired. I enjoyed the play about the bridge the most. The lead actor in that was the most enjoyable in all of the skits. I also enjoyed the actress who baked the cookies. I have seen her in other productions too and she is always good. The play about the couple who were playing a game by writing on paper was also very intriguing and those actors were great as well. The venue was VERY hot. It takes a lot to make me hot and I was very uncomfortable which truly impacted my enjoyment of some of the plays because it was hard to concentrate at times of extreme heat.
