Christopher Durang's hit comedy Beyond Therapy follows Bruce and Prudence, two neurotic strangers in search of love. Only one thing stands in their way: their therapists, who need more counseling than they do! The play exposes the continuing neurotic crisis that defies psychotherapy and laughs at the premise of any logical hope for standard American values.

Beyond Therapy: Christopher Durang's Farcical Comedy

Full Price:
$30.00

The Jean Shelton Foundation presents Beyond Therapy, by Christopher Durang, a playwright famed for his outrageous and absurd comedy. Beyond Therapy centers around Prudence and Bruce, Manhattanites in therapy to turn around their poor track record with romance. Their therapists encourage them to place personal ads, leading to a disastrously funny first date between the two. As the two would-be romantics stumble toward a relationship with each other, it becomes increasingly clear that the therapists are more troubled than their patients. Beyond Therapy is Durang's most frequently produced play. Learn More

We almost walked out because the language was a bit to vulgar for us; and the story line while funny, was at times hard to follow.
I wouldn't take your parents if they are over 65 yrs or your children if they are under 15yrs.

The play was WONderful! I used to take acting classes at this theatre so it was nice to return. The performance of 'Beyond Therapy' was by far one of the FUNNIEST plays I have seen. The actors were great and well-cast. Goldstar is my favorite way of attending my cultural outings in the City. It is the only way I'd be able to afford going to so many. Thank you, Goldstar!!

Overall the acting was disappointing, but some of the actors shone while others did not. For the latter, their performances did not reach the comedic depth of what I thought was a very clever script. Perhaps my rating should be one up from "I didn't like it," but I can't recommend this evening at the theater.

More Information About Beyond Therapy

Description

Back by popular demand, Shelton Theater presents the dysfunctional and outrageous comedy Beyond Therapy. The play exposes the continuing American neurotic crisis that defies psychotherapy and laughs at the premise of any logical hope for standard American values, such as the current moral grandstanding in politics today. The play reminds audiences that sanity is relative and that love is something to hold onto.

Bruce and Prudence are deeply into therapy. Prudence's macho therapist is urging her to be more assertive while Bruce's wacky female therapist wants him to meet women by placing a personal ad. She does not fully comprehend that Bruce has a male lover who is not pleased by Bruce's desire to date a woman: Prudence. Bruce doesn't know how to handle poor, nervous Prudence, and Prudence doesn't know what to make of her unpredictable new boyfriend. They do learn to live beyond therapy in this delightful off-Broadway hit that moved successfully to Broadway.
