Based on the playwright's life and considered one of Arthur Miller's most personal plays, After The Fall follows a man on his quest to make peace with his own history and with the tumultuous world around him. This experimental portrait of a man struggling with the choices he has made in his public and private life examines the personal, political and universal forces that collide when we "fall" from innocence. Following the death of his second wife, Quentin tries to move forward, but he must also relive childhood losses, failed marriages and the effects of the 1950s' Blacklist. This rarely produced classic is presented by the HumanArts Theater Company. Learn More

I enjoyed this one man show more than I thought I would. He was very intense and passionate. He kept my full attention 99% of the time. I really appreciated his delivery and how he looked into the audience to connect with us. The story was sad and meaningful with a touch of humor and grace. Kudos to the playwright/actor.Written on Sep 23 2009

When he walks out try to vision a young Kenny Rogers; his life story is amazing, it pulls at your heart and draws you in. He's a true all american cowboy from Utah, has his bestfriend onstage (guitar), sings (several) - a memorable song titled Bones, has many dreams of moments with his missing Father - such as, Jesus at the campfire, or Hamlet riding shotgun through the desert. It's a true story about a cow-boy>man whose father walks away and never returns. The son endures a trying life in search of understanding why his father left.Written on Sep 14 2009

So much "stage memoir" is full of rage, and though we often understand that it is important for the writer-performer to get this vitriol out of his or her system, an audience can expire from the tedium if not from the toxic fumes. Very rarely does such work actually inspire an audience with its sincerity. Here, we have a performer who has much to be angry about, and we see, in raw, painful detail, how he has often turned his anger upon himself. But he has worked with it, and worked with himself, so we are able to enjoy and revel in the result, even as our eyes fill with tears.Written on Sep 21 2009

Raymond King Shurtz wrote and last night performed a powerful, mesmerizing, and poignant eulogy to his lost father. His one-man play was very moving, delivered spot-on. And his Western guitar strumming and singing was quite melodic and entertaining! He's an excellent story-teller, quite talented, and clearly loves and misses his Dad, who was obviously his best buddy. Our hearts go out to Raymond King Shurtz -- and to all men who miss their father.Written on Sep 12 2009

More Information About Bohemian Cowboy
Description
Theatre 4S NYC, the Jean And Ken Campbell Foundation, and the Boulder Heritage Foundation, are proud to present the San Francisco Premiere of Bohemian Cowboy, written and performed by award-winning playwright and actor Raymond King Shurtz.
In November of 2005, Raymond Dean Shurtz walked into the desert in Clark County, Nevada, The Valley of Fire, and simply disappeared.
For two years, Nevada detectives, Nevada Search and Rescue, psychics, private detectives, and family and friends, searched for his body. Mr. Shurtz has never been found.
A honky-tonk singer, a cowboy, a carpenter, and a traveler of mythic proportions, the senior Mr. Shurtz left an array of mysteries as a "disappearing specialist".
In an attempt to unravel these mysteries, his son writes and performs the legacy his father left him, using the same characteristics as his father, the original "disappearing specialist" and "bohemian cowboy".
Raymond King Shurtz was the 2003 recipient of The Arizona Commission on the Arts Playwriting Fellowship, for Blue Baby, A Memoir, and is the author of 31 plays, published by Samuel French and Anchorage Press. His plays have been produced worldwide, several in NYC by the renowned underground theatre, Theatre 4S NYC.
