The Brentano String Quartet performs a specially-commissioned program celebrating its 20th anniversary, courtesy of San Francisco Performances. Six contemporary composers created pieces inspired by the unfinished works of several late, great musical giants, linking the current with the classic. The composer pairings include Bach/Sofia Gubaidulina; Haydn/John Harbison; Mozart/Vijay Iyer; Schubert/Bruce Adolphe; and Shostakovich/Stephen Hartke. The quartet will alternate the new compositions with the masters' partially-completed works in an innovative and exciting evening of brilliantly-played music. Violinists Mark Steinberg and Serena Canin, Misha Amory, viola, and Nina Lee, cellist, make up the award-winning chamber ensemble.

Quotes & Highlights

  • “The Brentano gave it an excellent performance, and filled the whole afternoon with taut playing that amounted to more than the sum of its parts. The fragments humanized the frail strivings of the old masters, and the new responses made manifest the long tendrils with which living composers are always reaching backward toward tradition." --Boston Globe

Description

San Francisco Performances presents the Brentano String Quartet in a special program that includes a co-commissioned project, titled Fragments: Connecting Past and Present. For this project (and as part the Quartet’s 20th anniversary), the Quartet asked six contemporary composers to respond to unfinished works -- fragments — of late composers. The Quartet includes Mark Steinberg, violin, Serena Canin, violin, Misha Amory, viola and Nina Lee, cello.

New compositions will be played alongside the original works to create an exciting evening of dialogue between music of the past and music of the present.
