The winner of multiple Tony Awards three decades apart, John Kander and Fred Ebb's classic musical comes to the intimate performance space of the Young Performers Theatre at Fort Mason. In pre-war Berlin, 1930, Kit-Cat Club singer Sally Bowles encounters a rich German politician, a young American writer and the club's darkly comic Emcee. Featuring music by one of Broadway's best teams, the musical contains such songs as "Wilkommen," "Tomorrow Belongs to Me" and the title song "Cabaret." The 1967 stage musical was adapted into an Oscar-winning film, and the 1998 Broadway revival ran for six years.

Okay...it had some rare hightlights. Ironically enough, I brought my friend from Germany...thinking it would be the perfect show for him...he said the German spoken in the show was hard to understand. Overall, not enough men in the cast...the American male acted too gay and too child-like. We ended up leaving at intermission because the show was already too long at 1 1/2 hours.

Would you believe me if I said it was dramatic, sensual, fun and haunting all in the same show? An intimate theater, an incredible 4-piece band and a talented cast really brings the stage and the story alive with much music, singing and dancing throughout the whole play.

Most of us can relate to love won and love lost, challenges to our sense of justice, tests of our courage and fortitude, and fantasies of sensual and sexual freedom, all of which blossom in this play.

Well done, well worth the trip—enjoy!

We went to the performance of Cabaret last Sunday night. I didn't really know what to expect, but I'm a big fan of local theater groups and Cabaret was one of my favorite movies. This was my first purchase from Goldstar and I was prepared to just be open to whatever was to be.

The theater at Fort Mason is on the third floor, took the elevator up, clean and easy. The atmosphere was very casual, you check yourself off the list of will call tickets. The night we went it was a small audience. You could sit on stacking chairs up front or theater style chairs more in the back. We sat at small cocktail tables in the front.

They have snacks and soft drinks, beer & wine in the same room as the performance. We had some wine, and with sitting at the table up front, it felt like we were in the cabaret.
Just Loved it!

As I noted earlier in my review, I do like local theater. This performance was certainly a step above. The voices, music, costumes and level of intensity certainly make you feel like you are at a totally professional performance.

I enjoyed it all, I give it 4 stars.

After years of watching musical theatre in small to large venues and companies, I have grown accustomed to a certain level of performance. I can safely say that this performance, although performed with great enthusiasm, failed to to meet my criteria. The new venue for this company can excuse the set, but the dancing and musical performance often seemed forced and awkward. I hope that future performances by this potentially good company will improve.

Description

A divinely decadent experience! Independent Cabaret Productions and Shakespeare at Stinson will present a startling rendition of Tony-award-winning musical Cabaret, directed by Hector Correa. In the Young Performers Theatre at Fort Mason, the production will use an intimate space much like what Christopher Isherwood, author of the memoir upon which Cabaret was based, saw in pre-World-War-II Berlin. The audience won't just be watching a show; they'll be experiencing the dark, decadent world of Weimar Germany, a strange locale on the border of drama and burlesque, a place on the edge of civilization and of humanity itself. Our old friends Sally, Cliff, and the Emcee will all be there. Hopefully you will be too!
