Members Who Went Said:Had never seen this production, so didn't know what to expect. Loved the small feel of the theatre. Fun production & cast. Interaction with the audience was great. Oddly, one homophobic man in the front row freaked out a bit when a male cabaret character got too close, and that in itself was entertaining ;-). Seats were third row, center - perfect! Go see it! SF Playhouse is presenting another winning, innovative show. The fun and versatile stage settings make you really feel as if you there at the Kit Kat Klub, on a train, or in Frau Schneider's boarding house. The sexy-scary Kit Kat girls—and boys—kick and strut in a wonderfully sustained choreography. Brian Yates Sharber takes the Emcee role up many notches with his devilish demeanor, physical grace, and wonderful voice that choruses the dark pull-thread (yes, the Nazi regime) that threatens to unravel the gaiety and destroy lives. Lauren English is a complex and sad-but-brave-because-the-show-must-go-on Sally Bowles. In fact, since I did see it on the very first night of previews I will probably see it again when the minor kinks are worked out. Life is beautiful, the girls and boys are beautiful, even the orchestra is beautiful, and most of all this production is beautiful.

Lyrics by Fred Ebb Music by John Kander Directed by Bill English “What good is sitting alone in your room? Come hear the music play!” John Kander and Fred Ebb’s legendary landmark musical turns Weimar Berlin of 1931 into a dark and sexually charged haven of decadence where its extraordinary and morally ambiguous inhabitants are determined to keep up appearances as the real world-outside the comfortable sanctuary of the cabaret- prepares for the nightmarish chaos of war. It is here that Sally Bowles performs nightly at the infamous Kit-Kat Klub in “a shimmering masterpiece of a show guaranteed night after night. Its divine decadence darling!” About SF Playhouse: The aim of the SF Playhouse is to provide a creative home and inspiring environment where actors, directors, writers, designers and theater lovers converge to create works that celebrate the human spirit. Founded by Bill English and Susi Damilano in 2003, SF Playhouse is Union Square's intimate, professional theatre. Using professional actors and world-class design, the SF Playhouse — which won the Bay Guardian's 2006 Best Off Broadway Theatre Award and about which the San Francisco Chronicle raved "San Francisco's newest theatre isn't just another tiny stage carved out of a storefront...it's an enticing introduction to a new company" — has become an intimate theatre alternative to the traditional Union Square theatre fare, garnering 20 Bay Area Theatre Critic nominations in its first year. |
