Always an innovator, trumpeter Chuck MacKinnon's insatiable quest for musical adventure has propelled him into projects along a wide range of jazz styles, from straight-ahead to soul/jazz to improvised psychedelic electronica. MacKinnon's latest project, as reflected on his recent CD, "New Transmission," represents a return to his acoustic jazz roots, with hard-hitting arrangements for a three-horn front line.
MacKinnon will rock Pearl's with a fabulous ensemble featuring L.A. tenor saxman Matt Otto, NYC alto saxophonist Douglas Yates, young jazz pianist Leonard Thompson, powerful percussionist Diego Voglino (of the cutting-edge NYC jazz/funk trio Big Bucket) on drums, and the Bay Area's own John Schifflet on bass.
A intriguing talent and an exciting, pioneering artist, trumpeter Chuck MacKinnon is a San Francisco native who came of age performing on the fertile local jazz scene. He earned his stripes sitting in with local piano legend Smith Dobson, and has since forged a respected place in the demanding New York City music world.
MacKinnon has performed around the world with star performers including the Duke Ellington Orchestra, the Cab Calloway Orchestra, Joe Henderson, James Moody, Rufus Reid, Randy Brecker, Mark Levine, Bruce Forman, and Sam Rivers, Kenny Brooks and Dred Scott. He's also performed with crossover groups including Norah Jones, Isaac Mizrahi, Charlie Hunter, Benevento and Russo, Peter Apfelbaum, Will Bernard and Groove Collective.
