Featuring the music of Green Day and based on their classic album of the same name, the rock musical American Idiot tells the story of three lifelong friends who must choose between their dreams and the comfort of suburbia. Directed by Michael Mayer, the Tony Award-winning director of Spring Awakening, American Idiot features the smash hits "Boulevard of Broken Dreams," "Holiday" and "21 Guns." A two time Tony Award-winner and nominee for Best Musical, American Idiot played for more than 400 performances on Broadway, where The New York Times called it "thrilling and emotionally charged, as moving as anything on Broadway!" This engagement at the Orpheum Theatre is a Bay Area homecoming for Idiot which had its pre-Broadway run at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre in 2009. Learn More

This is tough to review because they are all solo acts. I wish we could rate them individually so here goes . . .Written on Mar 01 2010
Act 1 - I did not really enjoy this "quirky" newcomer's performance. Most of the audience was laughing yet it really was not my type of humor. I am glad the rest of them were different and better.
Act 2 - This guy was engaging and his story was interesting. I think he will become better over time. The cultural observations he made were intriguing.
Act 3 - A seasoned performer and good at it. She did an excellent job in a short amount of time. She also interacts well with the audience. I laughed and it was touching. I was wanting it to continue to learn more about her grandma so 4 stars for this one.
Act 4 - I would also give this performer 4 stars as it was smart and physically and verbally engaging. I enjoyed how the stories were intertwined and I liked her energy and physicality.
Thank God the last two acts were very good. I'll go back though because I always like to support local talent. These people have courage.

Description
MELDY HERNANDEZ
In “Nursing In Timbuktu” a Filipina-American nurse shares true birth stories from her work with mothers in America and Mali, West Africa. Through this movement journey, we visit Mindanao, Philippines, the land of mother loss, hope, and the global connection of all mothers.
Meldy Hernandez is a writer/performer/public health nurse who believes in the power of stories to promote health. Her work mixes spoken word storytelling and West African dance to explore the global/human connection and the body's ability to heal. She has performed at various venues in Spain, West Africa, and the United States. She is currently developing her first solo show titled, "Nursing In Timbuktu", where she tells the story of being a nurse for women and children. In the Fall of 2009, Meldy performed parts of this current project at the Marsh and Stage Werx Theatre.
MARY VAN NOTE
"What I Hid During Nap Time” is Mary Van Note's first foray into solo performance where she tackles heavy topics like Alf, Pee-wee Herman, and Susan Sarandon.
Known as a quirky stand-up comedienne, Mary Van Note performs at colleges, clubs and festivals across the country. She is the creator and star of the award-winning Independent Film Channel web series The Mary Van Note Show: Gavin Really Wants Me.
JAWAD ALI
In “Mysteries of an Earthquake” an earthquake relief worker from San Francisco goes to mountainous northern Pakistan and gets hurled through the cultural looking glass. Amid chaos and logistical nightmares – digging out rubble, managing spreadsheets and bridging the gap between relief agencies and locals – he discovered a mix of human grace and silliness, dignity and joy.
Jawad Ali has developed this piece with the help of directors W. Kamau Bell and Martha Rynberg in the Solo Performance Workshop. He plans to combine more “Mysteries” with another story of culture clash piece, “Hizbullah Beach Towel” – about Lebanon’s June 2009 elections – in a full-length production later this year.
NICOLE MAXALI
In “I Heart Lola” life with grandma is suddenly not the same... for Nicole and for her grandma. In 2005, Nicole Maxali quit her job for ABC7 and began her journey as a working artist. Wanting to perform more of her own writing and under tutelage of acclaimed comic/actor W. Kamau Bell, Nicole Maxali wrote and performed her very first one woman show: “Identification Please” in 2008. Her solo performance was produced by Bindlestiff Studio and featured at The Thick House in April 2009 and most recently at the 2009 Kearney Street Workshop’s festival, APATURE. This current piece is an excerpt of her third full length solo show, “I Heart Lola” where she has performed at CounterPulse and Stagewerx Theater.
