One of today's rising comedy stars, Barry Rothbart recently made his debut on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, where he killed it with his easy, natural disposition and quirky personal stories about everything from the bizarre things he's seen around L.A. to his vision of what he'll be like as an old man. He can be seen on TV in national commercials for Taco Bell, Honda and Miller Light, and in TNT's Men of a Certain Age and the 2012 season of MTV's Punk'd. Rothbart was named a "Best of the Fest" performer at the 2011 Montreal Just For Laughs Festival, and has been seen on TBS's Conan. He's even got a role in the upcoming Martin Scorsese movie The Wolf of Wall Street. See him in person at the San Francisco Punch Line. Learn More

Written on Sep 18 2012Punch Line - good as always. Was suprised that it was only about half to 3/4 full for a Friday night 8:00PM show. All the comedians were good, no uncomfortable silences. Headliner Joe DeRosa very good; he's kind of like a younger Lewis Black, but not focused on politics.
Written on Sep 18 2012I enjoyed 2 of the warm-up acts, especially the woman. The headliner didn't really do it for me. It was a little funny, but not very funny. I stuck out the whole show, and it was fun, but not real fun.
Written on Sep 14 2012Joe was hilarious. Angry comics don't come around here that much and based on the other reviews, I guess for good reason (Marc Maron is the only other I can think of & he was a little more tame than usual because it was a charity event).
Just because your husband is from New York doesn't mean he'll get the NY humor. Maybe that's why we can't get Otto & George or Jim Norton out here.
If you walk out on a performance before it's over, the problem is you, not him. First of all, you didn't give him a chance. Second, do some research before seeing stand-up - this is the age of the internet. DeRosa has done Opie & Anthony, as well as podcasts with Bill Burr & Robert Kelly.
I would have paid full price to see him but thanks to Goldstar, I didn't have to. Great show!
Written on Sep 13 2012The opener, Kelly (I can't remember her last name), was a surprise. Her act was mostly family stuff-kids and her husband- which usually leaves SF audiences somewhat cold. There was only one woman who admitted to having a kid, but Kelly presented her act in a way that had even me laughing heavily. Hopefully she'll expand the scope of her act a bit more, then she'll have a shot to really make it. I can see why Joe DeRosa is labeled as NY comedian. His negative, angry attitude took a bit for the audience to get with, but once we understood his schtick and his timing he got much better. He is different from most angry comedians so it took a bit to get him. By the end I was really enjoying him and wishing for more. He could use a little polish to have his act more easily accepted by the crowd but since it feels more like you are hanging out at home with him rather than in a comedy club I'm not sure if he would really give a s&!t. Worth seeing through Goldstar, but I wouldn't pay full price to see him again.
