it was such a treat to see something completely unique from Cuba. They covered it all...creole, haitian, west africa, and traditional cuban. They were truly ambassadors for the island. my partner and I jumped on stage and danced too...el cubano had to represent and dance with those lovely singers. :)Written on Nov 04 2011

Wonderful singers, such warmth and enthusiasm felt throughout the performance, both in the audience and on stage. Creole songs, soulful and sad as well as buoyant and happy. Enjoyed by all.Written on Nov 04 2011

A heartfelt performance by a warm, multi-talented, high-energy, vibrant group with gorgeous voices and tons of personality. I felt so lucky to have seen them. I was also impressed by how good our seats were (row H on the aisle), given how big an audience the show drew.Written on Nov 04 2011

Quotes & Highlights
- “From tales about their Haitian ancestors who arrived on the island to work in sugar and coffee plantations, to stories of humour and love found in everyday life, by the end of the set the group were out in the stalls, shaking hands with the audience who were on their feet dancing.” --Birmingham Mail
- “Entrancing, exquisite, unlike any other music show.” --The Scotsman
- “Sleek, theatrical, socially conscious and full of joyful life. The performers have eye-popping, African-patterned costumes and strutting, hip-grinding dance moves ... exhilarating.” --The New York Times
Description
Formed in 1994 by choir director Emilia Diaz Chavez, the ten-strong group hails from Camaguey, Cuba. Each member is a direct descendant of Haitian migrants. Haitians who escaped slavery at the end of the 18th Century or more recently came as labourers to work Cuba's sugar plantations. The Creole Choir of Cuba have preserved musical treasures from Haiti, Dominica and Cuba within the active communities in Cuba.
With information gathered from generations of Haitian immigrants, the Creole Choir of Cuba promotes and performs music of Haitian origin, especially "La Cancionistica", music which has been enriched by elements of other Creole speaking Caribbean countries. Their repertoire consists of a wide range of choral arrangements with percussion accompaniment.
