Smuin Ballet breaks the boundaries of traditional dance with this evening of vibrant, innovative works from some of the Bay Area's most exciting choreographers. Choreographer Garrett Ammon unleashes his own take on Tchaikovsky's iconic score in Serenade for Strings, using movement to reflect the composition's intensity and precision. In Objects of Curiosity, Smuin's choregrapher-in-residence Amy Seiwert explores the tensions between desire and restraint, pairing them with a delicate score by Philip Glass and Foday Musa Suso that mirrors her study on stage. The evening concludes with Frankie and Johnny, Michael Smuin's passionate tribute to the legendary Gene Kelly, danced to a soundtrack of some of the biggest names in Latin and mambo music. Learn More

DAKAH HIP HOP ORCHESTRA
DJ JERRY ROSS
With more musicians than you can shake a stick at (topping off at 60 members), the Dakah orchestra is taking hip-hop in an entirely new direction.
Touted as the world’s “largest hip-hop orchestra,” Dakah’s MCs and DJs are backed by a medley of classically trained musicians (many of whom are members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic) for a unique symphonic lineup.
While most of contemporary hip hop is contructed with minimal doses of samples and synths, Dakah provides a unique lush backdrop that can only be provided by live violins, violas, cellos, clarinets, oboes, bassoons, harps, and the rest of the symphonic range.
Though Dakah ranks as one of Los Angeles most beloved groups, with recent shows at the Disney Theatre and Henry Fonda Theatre attracting thousands, this will be their first show outside of Los Angeles, and it will be eagerly anticipated.
This year marks the historic 10th Anniversary of the North Beach Jazz Fest. After 10 years, NBJF has pulled out all of the stops to present its finest lineup ever, a feast of sights and sounds from around the United States.
With over 50 acts and hundreds of musicians, it’s easy to see why this year’s North Beach Jazz Fest will be the best ever!
