Named one of the top ten plays of 2009 by The Advocate, Daniel Talbott's Slipping is an emotional drama about Eli, a high-school senior, who moves with his mother from California to Iowa after his dad's death. But after being mistreated by his closeted ex in California, Eli struggles with the idea of starting a new relationship with the straight star athlete who's befriended him and now wants to get even closer. New Conservatory Theatre Center is known for its innovative productions centered on theatrical work for youth and the LGBT community, and continues that mission with this show, directed by Andrew Nance. I would have enjoyed it more, had I more knowledge of Broadway. I didn't get some of the parodies. All songs are about alternative lifestyles, portraying several archetypes (the leather gang gay, the transvestites, the old flamboyant couple, the professor-like gay, etc.). Social commentary is limited, but it is okay, giving the show is about picaresque fun, not about a social thesis on gay topics. I would have liked it more if it would have had a plot (any plot, even if cliched and pointless is better than no plot, in my opinion). The best part is the improvisational tune made with audience feedback.Written on Dec 31 2010

One of the best shows I've seen as a member of Goldstar. I've seen hundreds of performances using goldstar and I've been at the New Conservatory Theater many times. This show tops them all for humor and meaning. You'll particularly like this one if you like show tunes and/or are Gay. Brilliant writing and a mostly well chosen cast. One singer needs to belt out a song with more volume or should be given a mike. Other than that a must see.Written on Jan 10 2011

This is a very cute show. Not meant to be anything deep and it's not, but it's fun. The singers could have been a little louder, but they were good and hilarious. I would and have recommended this show.Written on Jan 26 2011
