I think it's important that this sort of thing is done not just at holiday time but frequently! Thanks for making it easy!

About the Life Learning Academy's Organic Opportunities Program
Nothing is more important to human life than food. Our health and well-being as individuals, as communities, and as a society relates directly to how we produce or acquire, distribute, and consume our food.

Life Learning Academy’s Organic Opportunities uses food as a tool to engage students in academic learning, vocational training, and personal development. By involving students in every component of the food system, Organic Opportunities also aims to alter students’ relationship with food, inspiring them to develop healthy lifelong eating habits and share that new knowledge with the surrounding community.

Organic Opportunities consists of four distinct classes: Garden/Business, Nutrition, Culinary Arts, and Math/Construction. Together, students in these four classes develop and manage all components of the Organic Opportunities enterprise -- a backyard mini-farm and produce business.

Whether students are researching greenhouse designs, tabulating results from a market research questionnaire, analyzing the nutritional content of salsa, or discovering new and delicious ways to prepare Swiss chard, all coursework relates directly to the Organic Opportunities enterprise, and ultimately to student and community health and well-being.

Students in Organic Opportunities classes demonstrate their new knowledge and skills in a variety of ways throughout the year. One of their ongoing enterprises is bi-monthly delivery of the fresh produce they grow to formerly homeless families living on Treasure Island and other families in need.

About Delancey Street Life Learning Academy
Life Learning Academy (LLA), a diploma-granting San Francisco Unified School District Charter School founded in 1998, serves 75 high-risk youths, 14-18 years old, who have not been successful in traditional school settings for a variety of reasons. LLA's goal is to create a safe learning community characterized by high expectations and standards for mental and emotional growth, the development of structure and a value system, use of the latest educational and technological tools and strategies, community service and cross-cultural understanding. Life Learning Academy uses project-based learning to motivate youths, engage them in learning and provide opportunities to develop responsibility, judgment, and the skills necessary for productive adulthood.
