One of San Francisco’s most culturally-rich culinary experiences is right under your nose, yet its edible value is even unknown to most locals. Japantown, one of only three remaining Japanese neighborhoods in the United States, is the latest destination offered by Edible Excursions, uncovering the area’s historical relevance and “hidden” restaurants and markets.
Unassuming and peaceful, San Francisco’s Japantown neighborhood is home to artisans of ancient fare and traditional crafts. Strolling from cobblestone pathways to surprisingly unrelated mall floors and amongst naturally-simple landmarks, you’ll find yourself popping into several food markets, shops and restaurants. You’ll come across neighborhood “secrets” often passed over by rushed visitors, hear shop-owner stories, learn about cultural talents and taste specialties made with authentic Japanese ingredients.
On this tasting tour of seven businesses through Japantown, you’ll grow to appreciate and understand why this neighborhood is such an important place to San Franciscans and to the United States.
Tastings may include:
Osaka-style Okonomiyaki (Japanese pizza)
Red bean filled taiyaki at the local coffee shop
Savory salads from a Japanese specialty food market
Mochi from one of the last remaining manufacturers
A tad sweet and creamy sweet potato latte
Onigiri, traditional rice balls, with a modern twist
Masala dosa and chutney tasting
