From Edward Albee, writer of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, comes the Pulitzer Prize-winning play A Delicate Balance, performed by Custom Made Theatre Co. Agnes and Tobias seem to live a quiet life, even with Agnes' alcoholic sister making an occasional scene. But when their best friends arrive unannounced and lock themselves upstairs with no intention of leaving, the delicate balance of their family begins to unravel.

Good performance by all the actors, but the play just didn't do it for me. It touches on the possibility of several interesting conflicts without exploring any of them well, and the characters are both far too one-dimensional and unable to garner any sympathy from the audience. Why is everyone so unhappy? Why don't they do something about it? Why are you constantly filled with the urge to shake some sense into them?

The only character I found remotely likable was the drunk sister, and she didn't have enough good lines.

Edward Albee is, arguably, America's greatest living playwright, and Balance is one of his finest plays. If you have never seen it, you must. If you have seen it, perhaps the AFT version or even the celebrated Lincoln Center revival, you may want to pass. I am a huge fan of Elaine Stritch, who has been called the last first lady of the American theatre, and her performance as Claire is burned into my memory. As admirable as Shelley Lynn Johnson's performance is, I could not shake the Stritch spectre. The announced running time for Acts I and II was 80 minutes, but clocked out as 90 minutes in actuality, and by the end of Act III only 10 people remained in the audience the night I was there. Still, I love this play, and everyone did their damnedest to make it work.

I was hesitant at first to see this production, since I love Edward Albee, and was worried it couldn't live up to what I had pictured. But this theatre company surpassed all my expectations. The stage was perfect, the actors were engrossing, and the intimate theatre drew you in all the more.
I brought a friend with me, who didn't know Albee's work, and every few minutes he couldn't help but whisper, "I LOVE this!"
truly the best production i've seen in a very long time.

Quotes & Highlights

 • “Custom Made reminds theater audiences of San Francisco’s busy, excellent small-theater days... Albee mixes humor, suspense and pathos superbly.” --San Francisco Examiner
 • "...a productive mix of unexpected laughs and slowly unsettling situations that build nicely to a slow-dawning, teasingly ambiguous epiphany." --San Francisco Bay Guardian, Recommended

Description

Albee's remarkable, ageless play gives no easy answers, but within the bite, wit and unexpected twists and turns of this family in crisis we are treated to a masterpiece of modern drama. Themes of loss, love, family and failure are nothing new to Albee, but in A Delicate Balance they converge in a frightening roller-coaster ride that dissembles the promise of the American dream.

Directed by Shotgun company member, and Custom Made actress, Katja Rivera, and featuring company members Leah S. Abrams (The Heidi Chronicles) and AJ Davenport (Slavs!), returning actress Shelley Lynn Johnson (Assassins, Finding the Sun), and introducing new Custom Made players Jean Forseman, Stuart Hall and Dennis McIntyre, A Delicate Balance is a theatrical experience you will not soon forget.
