Eric Comstock and Barbara Fasano, winners of the 2010 New York Nightlife Award, bring their latest show, Helluva Town: A New York Soundtrack to the Rrazz Room. This brand new show celebrates the Big Apple and the love-hate relationship it inspires in its residents. The pair will perform an idiosyncratic mix of songs from Broadway and Hollywood, the pop singer-songwriters and the jazz songbook, including works from Leonard Bernstein, Rodgers & Hart, Paul Simon and Joni Mitchell. The duo debuted the show to sold out audiences in New York, where it was dubbed "exhilerating" by the New York Times.

Smooth Soul at the Rrazz Room With the Dramatics

Full Price:
$50.00
Our Price:
$25.00

Enjoy some classic smooth soul and quiet storm R&B in the sophisticated and intimate setting of the Rrazz Room, one of San Francisco's premiere night clubs. In their early '70s heyday, the Dramatics were an anomaly: a Detroit singing group signed not to their famed hometown label, Motown, but to the legendary Southern soul label Stax/Volt. Their sound, as heard on hit singles like "Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get" and "In the Rain," straddles both worlds, combining the Temptations-like silky-smooth harmonies of Motown with the earthiness of Memphis-style soul. Still performing after more than 40 years, the group features veteran member L.J. Reynolds along with Willie Ford, Donald Albert and Winzell Kelly. Learn More

I have been a long time fan of Eric and it was pure joy to see him back in SF with his elegant, charming and talented wife, Barbara Fasano. I went to both shows (Sunday and Monday), enjoying their duets and solos, but really was thrilled by the incredible piano performances by Eric with his great arrangements (ala Bobby Short!). While I felt the show was too scripted for a NYC audience (many references that did not go over here), the song list was clever, charming and exciting. The thoughtful tribute to Bob Grimes was well received!) BRING this great duo back soon!

A very polished first class excercise in how to present a stunning New York City evening of entertainment. A nightclub act that one never sees anymore in San Francisco or the West Coast. Charm & sophistication has been brought back to the Rrazz Room. Sad that it was for only two performances!

Very classy couple -- lots of style, looks and personality, plus great material and polished presentation -- but alas, while his voice was up to the task, hers clearly was not. It was most apparent when she assumed the challenge of Joni Mitchell, but even when she was in the major keys, her great energy couldn't compensate for the absence of a real voice. Since the theme was We Love New York, an even more competitive venue than SF, I suspect she was once much better, especially since he gave her some loving applause from the piano bench when she came closest.

The venue is intimate, they validate parking for the lot across the street and their cocktails are excellent, if pricey. With the 2-drink minimum, it's at least a $50 per person event w/Goldstar for a 1-hour set. For me, at that price per hour, the entertainment has to be satisfying.

More Information About Eric Comstock and Barbara Fasano

Description

Eric Comstock and Barbara Fasano make their debut at the Rrazz Room, fresh from an acclaimed ("Exhilarating" – New York Times), sold-out engagement at the Oak Room Supper Club at the Algonquin Hotel. Their new show, “Helluva Town: A New York Soundtrack” celebrates the love/hate affair Comstock, Fasano and most New Yorkers have with their city. Rather than sing predictable New York anthems, Comstock and Fasano will perform an idiosyncratic mix of songs from Broadway and Hollywood, the pop singer-songwriters and the jazz songbook. The wide gamut of writers includes Leonard Bernstein, Rodgers & Hart, Comden & Green, Charles Strouse & Lee Adams, Cy Coleman & Carolyn Leigh, Paul Simon, Joni Mitchell, Horace Silver, Jon Hendricks, Harry Warren, Billy Strayhorn, and Bacharach & David. Comstock and Fasano will perform songs from such New York musicals as On the Town, 42nd Street, Golden Boy, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Sweet Smell of Success, and Promises, Promises.

Winners of the 2010 New York Nightlife Award, they are the New York nightclub world's most celebrated team, with an act that is as entertaining as it is musically savvy. Whether the song is by Cole Porter or Paul Simon, Duke Ellington or Joni Mitchell, Comstock and Fasano make it fresh and new, and their audiences feel they've been to a terrific party where the music and the stories have been equally great.

Stephen Holden of The New York Times has declared that "Mr. Comstock and Ms. Fasano are turning the neighborhood into a hotbed of pleasure." Rex Reed of The New York Observer wrote, "He is hip, daring, confident and dynamic. She gives off palpable electricity. They lure sophisticated New Yorkers to discover magic after midnight. If love is a wave, they’re riding the crest of it." The New York Post’s Frank Scheck raved, "Their joint venture is a capital idea. When they sing together the evening is transformed from collaboration to alchemy."

Although they’ve been compared to Nick and Nora, Fred and Ginger, and Lunt and Fontanne, Comstock and Fasano's unique style is all their own. The multi-award winners have been honored as vocalists, recording artists, and writers of their numerous performance pieces. They received an unprecedented three MAC Awards in one year including Best Vocal Duo, Outstanding Female Vocalist and Record of the Year. Barbara’s award-winning Record of the Year, “Written In The Stars”, a Harold Arlen collection, is played on radio stations throughout the world, and has been praised in such diverse publications as JazzTimes and Playbill. Eric, the co-creator and star of the hit revue Our Sinatra, just released his fourth CD, “bitter/sweet”, an intimate guitar-vocal collaboration with guitar star Randy Napoleon.

Their many New York engagements include Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Feinstein's, The Carlyle and Birdland, and they were featured in the 92nd Street Y's ‘Lyrics and Lyricists’ tributes to Johnny Mercer and Johnny Burke. They headline at Caramoor, Cooperstown Music Festival, Guild Hall in East Hampton, Sheldon Concert Hall in St. Louis, Prince Music Theatre in Philadelphia, The Colony Hotel in Palm Beach, and in music festivals and concert halls from coast to coast.
