Yerba Buena Center for the Arts welcomes back Congolese choreographer and director Faustin Linyekula and his company of male dancers in collaboration with a Kinshasa-based band led by electric guitar star Flamme Kapaya for this West Coast premiere. Their new piece, more more more... future, is a powerful dance/theater/performance work which reflects on the political, social and cultural history and present day struggles of the Congo. Part galvanizing dance, part cathartic concert, more more more... future takes inspiration from the driving force of ndombolo, a Congolese pop style that is a riotous blend of rumba, traditional rhythms, church fanfares and funk.

Wow. This was a truly GREAT performance! Got a standing ovation from the audience! Part concert, part dance performance, part poetry reading (most of the lyrics were in french, some were translated on via projections on the back wall). Didn't understand much of what was spoken - but "got it" from the emotions shown via the dance. Beautiful, really really beautiful and the music was wonderful too. Go see it!Written on Oct 03 2011

While singers/musicians/dancers were enthusiastic, they were not ready for prime time -- the stage was too big for their small group and they hadn't thought enough about their stage presence, where the dancers/musicians were situated given the viewing audience. They need to work on their presentation. I also was not impressed by the few moves that the dancers had - repetitive and not interesting - not traditional/ethnic nor contemporary/modern, just a lot of gyrating. Loved their costumes made from 'refugee' bags. That was the highlight.Written on Oct 03 2011
