In this world premiere, written and directed by Theatre Rhinoceros Executive Director John Fisher, we meet England's greatest general, Hector MacDonald, who also happened to be queer. "Fighting Mac's" exploits are juxtaposed against the present day experiences of Jesse, a young gay American soldier who, inspired by MacDonald, enrolls at West Point and is sent to Afghanistan to fight the war on terrorism.

The sound system went out and we were not advised what the delay was until 25 minutes after curtain. They should have said something earlier. The story was okay but the play really needs a more professional production.

Nice, rather obscure venue. The play was interesting and the actors gave it their all. Some of the fight scenes could be shortened quite a bit without losing the point.

This was an excellent play. Great storytelling and a deft handling of a very complicated subject. Wonderful performances. Would heartily recommend!

What a great play! The actors were great, enthusiastic and fun. The writing, too, was great--interesting, engaging, and both humorous and emotional. My date and I both enjoyed ourselves immensely!

More Information About Fighting Mac!

Description

Theatre Rhinoceros presents Fighting Mac!, the amazing true story of Hector MacDonald, England’s greatest general who was also queer. Fighting Mac, who fought in the 1890s in Afghanistan and Africa, is the subject of this play that juxtaposes his life with that of Jesse, a young American who fights in Afghanistan in 2010.

A statement from playwright and director John Fisher:

“Over the last decade I have explored the subject of gays in the military in a series of plays including Combat! (1996, 1998), Amnesia (2003), and Special Forces (2007). In June I will present my latest play on the subject; a play which finally portrays a military free of legally sanctioned prejudice – a prejudice which has tarnished it for so long. When I started writing this play over a year ago it was about the great nineteenth-century queer general Hector MacDonald. I feel the recent destruction of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” necessitates a splitting of focus in this play to include the contemporary scene.

Now the play tells the story of Jesse, a young gay man who is inspired by the heroics of Hector MacDonald to enroll in West Point and pursue a career in the army. His choice takes him to Afghanistan to fight in the war on terror. I see this play as my continuing dialogue with the gays in the military debacle.

Since Alexander the Great we have served with distinction. Now we may serve openly. This play celebrates that advancement.”
