The San Francisco Food Safari offers you the chance to explore San Francisco neighborhoods in-depth and discover the best of each area's food scene. This 2.5-hour tour focuses on the North Beach neighborhood, where Chef Joseph will offer his knowledge and insights on the best places to eat as well as the history and culture of the area. You'll have the chance to purchase whatever you'd like throughout this shopping tour, which takes you to Mara's Italian Pastries, Liguria Bakery, Molinari Deli and beyond. Each tour ends with a picnic lunch made up of the delicious treats you've purchased along the way. Chef Joseph began his culinary career at San Francisco's legendary Salmagundi. He was also the food critic at the Orange County and Long Beach Blade and IN Los Angeles magazines, has written food articles for magazines, worked as a caterer, taught cooking classes and is working on a book titled Created in California: The Golden State's Gifts to Gastronomy. Tour was great but it would be best to specify where exactly to meet. We waited at the corner of Union and Columbus and finally saw a group under the Fireman statue in the opposite corner.
I learned lots more about SF and to walk through the area with a knowledgeable guide was a blast!

We bailed out on the tour after another group of people did the same thing. It may be more interesting for tourists, but as a local I was looking for more details about specific buildings rather than stories about the earthquake and fire that...continued
Originally called the Latin Quarter, North Beach (which actually did have a beach some 150 years ago) was a mix of all nationalities until the laying of an “off-the-grid” avenue (later rechristened Columbus Avenue) sent many citizens scattering to other neighborhoods. But not the Italians — they stayed and turned North Beach into Little Italy.
Highlights of this tour include:
- Washington Square Park, one of the country’s “perfect parks”
- The oldest bar in town (unless they build an older one)
- The Condor, home of topless dancing. And bottomless dancing.
- The Killer Piano story
- The Hippodrome, the city’s remaining dance hall from the Barbary Coast era
- The only downtown district to survive the 1906 earthquake and fire** **
- City Lights
