Named one of the top ten plays of 2009 by The Advocate, Daniel Talbott's Slipping is an emotional drama about Eli, a high-school senior, who moves with his mother from California to Iowa after his dad's death. But after being mistreated by his closeted ex in California, Eli struggles with the idea of starting a new relationship with the straight star athlete who's befriended him and now wants to get even closer. New Conservatory Theatre Center is known for its innovative productions centered on theatrical work for youth and the LGBT community, and continues that mission with this show, directed by Andrew Nance. Unfortunately, one of the four dance numbers was cut, so the program was a bit short (one hour and 20 minutes total, including intermission) but the show itself was quite fascinating to watch. The body movements - especially the hands and arms - are so fluid and flexible as to be breathtakingly beautiful and awe-inspiring at the same time. There are comedic moments and the venue is very small, so you can see everything very clearly no matter where you sit. There are points of dialogue in an Indonesian language that makes for a certain lack of clarity for an English-speaking audience, and the absence of announcements regarding program changes as well as the informality of the set changes and staging itself transported me right back to Indonesia, where I remember watching similar dance performances with spiritual, comedic & dramatic themes as a delightful part of everyday culture. The gender-bending art form is indigenous and spiritually-based, so it does not have the same kind of impact as most transgendered shows you see in SF; the show is quite suitable for older children. My favorite piece was one in which a shadow puppet comes to life in the form of the dancer. To sum it up, if you are interested in cross-cultural art forms and enthralled by Indonesian dance in particular (as I am) you will not be disappointed.Written on Apr 22 2011
