Andre Thierry and his band Zydeco Magic will have you up on your feet and swinging the night away to the infectious grooves of French Creole music. With an original sound that merges traditional New Orleans-style Zydeco with hip-hop, blues, jazz and rock, the high-energy band has been nominated for a Grammy and was recently named Best Zydeco Group by the Bay Area Blues Society. To help make this dance party extra-special, the evening will begin with a brief Zydeco dance lesson, and Cajun food and beverages will be available for purchase. Learn More

I am a huge fan of Mark Cantor and his jazz film series. Those who thought "too much talking" miss the point. These events are more a jazz "short course" designed to educate as well as entertain. Mark requires the audience to listen as a scholarly lecture and learn, rather than merely watch film clips. Approach these events as a way to enhance your love of jazz and film, rather than as a passive film amusement, and you will benefit greatly.
Master jazz film archivist Mark Cantor continues to delight audiences as he brings gems from his collection of historical jazz film to Kanbar Hall. Bring old friends and meet new ones. Enjoy the complimentary intermission schmooze and graze buffet.
January 25, 2014: Among the artists to be featured are Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Shorty Rogers, Buddy Rich and Thelonious Monk.
