Sea of Reeds poses some curious questions. For instance: why would a staunch, lifelong atheist suddenly decide to go to Israel at the age of 52 to stage his own bar mitzvah? And what in the world does playing the oboe have to do with the Book of Exodus? You probably don't know the answers to either of those questions just yet, but in this brand-new comedy that is part monologue and part musical, Josh Kornbluth will take to the stage to shed some light on these offbeat topics. With an orchestra, his rabbi and his oboe in tow, Kornbluth delivers a unique night of entertainment with Sea of Reeds. Learn More

I am a huge fan of Mark Cantor and his jazz film series. Those who thought "too much talking" miss the point. These events are more a jazz "short course" designed to educate as well as entertain. Mark requires the audience to listen as a scholarly lecture and learn, rather than merely watch film clips. Approach these events as a way to enhance your love of jazz and film, rather than as a passive film amusement, and you will benefit greatly.
Master jazz film archivist Mark Cantor continues to delight audiences as he brings gems from his collection of historical jazz film to Kanbar Hall. Bring old friends and meet new ones. Enjoy the complimentary intermission schmooze and graze buffet.
May 4, 2013: Female Jazz Singers
The spotlight falls on some of the greatest female jazz singers, comparing the personal touches that each brought to her performance. Featured artists include Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Anita O’Day, June Christy, Dinah Washington, Billie Holiday, Peggy Lee, Anne Ross and Jo Stafford. The names might be familiar, but most of the footage shared this evening is new to the JCCSF audience.
